Governing Board Meeting

August 24, 2002

The general meeting of SCCAWS was held at the annual SCACA Clinic at the Embassy Suites in North Charleston on July 29, 2002 at 3:00 p.m. President Sandy Martin called the meeting to order, Cassandra Bolden opened the meeting with a prayer. Door prizes were given at various times throughout the meeting.

Sandy Martin introduced the present Executive Board members and congratulated SCACA Hall of Fame inductee, Peggy Anthony, volleyball coach for 24 years at Pickens High School, and stated that she has 707 wins, 8 state championships, and has twice been a North/South Volleyball All Star coach.

Sandy Martin gave a recap of the All Star Softball game. She explained the changes made in the All-Star Softball format. She stated there were four teams this year and that there were two games played on Friday night and Saturday morning. On Saturday the losers and winners of the Friday games played each other. The 1A/4A North team won both games.

Sandy Martin also described the new Volleyball All Star format for the 2002 event. The matches would be played like the softball games, but the 1A/2A and the 3A/4A classifications would be grouped together.

Sandy Martin reported that the All Star Volleyball and Softball coaches would be announced on July 30, 2002 at the SCACA business meeting.

Sandy recognized the CAWS award recipients. The Ann Fullerton $500.00 scholarships went to Katie Davis of Seneca and Jennifer Sibley of Orangeburg Wilkenson. The Trophies by "M" scholarship went to Kelsey Jones. The MVP Honorees were Marcia Coe of Walterboro and long time softball official, Jim Wyatt of Taylors. Volleyball All-Star MVP's were Andrea Manuel for the North and Erin Friday for the South. The Softball MVP's were 1A/4A North - Melanie Henkes (South Aiken), 2A/3A North - Amber Price (Crescent), 1A/4A South - Latronda Anderson (Lower Richland), and 2A/3A South - Jamie Durand (Silver Bluff).

Sandy Martin explained the responsibilities of the CAWS Region Representatives and the Area Representatives. She also explained how the All Star (seniors only) and All State Players are selected. Sandy asked for those coaches who wanted to volunteer to be a CAWS Region Rep to see Patsy Rhodes to sign up.

Sandy Martin opened the floor for nominations to fill the open positions on the CAWS Executive Board. Nominations for 4A lower were Teresa Kendle (Summerville) and Debra Tolar (Stratford). Patsy Rhodes made a motion to close the nominations and Cassandra Bolden seconded. Nominations for 3A Upper were Jo Webb (Clinton) and Peggy Anthony (Pickens). Ann Cioffi made a motion to close the nominations and Paula Kirkland seconded. Nominations for 2A Upper were Shannon Burton (West Oak) and April Wood (Palmetto). Casandra Bolden made a motion to close the nominations and Jennifer Numberger seconded. Nominations for 1A lower were Michael Rogers (Latta) and Marcia Blizzard Wagener-Salley, who declined the nomination. Lynn Hicks made a motion to close the nominations and it was seconded. A vote was taken to elect Executive Board members to fill open positions for the 2002-2003 school year.

During the voting, Dru Nix from the SCHSL addressed the CAWS members. She congratulated Peggy Anthony on being inducted into the SCACA Hall of Fame, and stated that she ranks 18th nationally for volleyball wins. She also mentioned player and coach ejections for the 2001-2002 school year, and that the Spalding ball will be used in the State volleyball and softball finals. She explained the new dual sport rule. Dru also congratulated Gary Adams of Crescent High School for his induction into the National Federation Hall of Fame in Boston in July.

Sandy Martin introduced Kelly Lynch and Susie Lueck, Clemson rowing coaches. They spoke to the association and showed a video of the Clemson Rowing program. They said that they were looking for female athletes that could row and that the program has scholarships.

In closing Sandy Martin thanked the Executive Board and Patsy Rhodes. Sandy Martin introduced Gaye Driggers as CAWS President for 2002-2003. Gaye recognized Sandy for her work this past year and presented her with a plaque. Gaye Driggers announced the names of the new board members, and asked that the survey be filled out and left at the back table. She reminded everyone to check out the web page in a month, and that she needed to meet with the Executive Board immediately following the general meeting.

Debby Squires commented about the Survey and asked if the board had considered having a softball and volleyball committee. Sandy Martin mentioned that this past year only the CAWS head softball coaches were allowed to vote for All State and All-Star players.

Gaye Driggers made closing remarks and the meeting was adjourned. The Executive Board will meet on August 24, 2002 at 10:00 at the SCHSL.
